Essay Writing – 2 – Some people believe that manufacturers and supermarkets should minimize the packaging material used. However, others think that consumers should avoid heavily packaged goods. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Over packaging is a clever tactic that many manufacturers employ to make their products look more attractive. Since consumers get drawn to beautifully packaged items, over packaging may help sell more products. Some manufacturers also employ this technique to hide the flaws of their products. It is true that manufacturers have a responsibility to avoid over packaging. But in my opinion, they are unlikely to stop this practice until consumers stop buying over packaged products.

Over packaging is not a benign practice. It does not help anyone except the manufacturer. Over packaging hurts the consumer and the environment. Wastefully packaged boxes take up a lot more space than necessary in shipping trucks. As a result, to carry the same amount of cargo, trucks have to make more trips. This results in the wastage of energy, materials and manpower

All the materials used for packaging will eventually end up in landfills. This creates a serious problem for the environment. Over packaging may lead to deforestation, global warming and air pollution.

Paper is still the most common material used for packaging. Each year tens of thousands of trees are being cut down to create packaging materials. Plastic is also used for packaging. The environmental impact of plastic is well-known. It is sad that companies still haven’t woken up to the dangers of over packaging and resort to such practices to sell their products.

To conclude, over packaging is not something that should be encouraged. While it might seem to be a amiable practice, it has negative impacts on the environment. Consumers have to stop buying over packaged products. Only then will manufacturers take notice and stop shipping their items in large almost empty packets.

Education is the acquiring of knowledge, skills, habits, values and beliefs from our teachers and seniors. In our traditional or conventional education system the content of the education is limited to already established customs and practices. We only learn the knowledge, which has been discovered or invented earlier. The format of the education limits the learning of the students to only cramming and the exams are also a test of more or less the “retention power”. In this essay we shall be discussing both the arguments.

Firstly, when Einstein gave this statement he experienced that students learn through a formally designed education pattern restricting their thought process. In fact, formal education limits the doors of imagination and creativity. There is little chance for exploring things, because the best way to learn something is to experience it. Thus, students are not encouraged to think out of the box and search for solution themselves. They all are expected to provide the same answer which is in books. This example shows why Einstein believed that formal education hinders the process of learning.

However on the contrary, if we started allowing kids to say, they do not need school they would probably learn nothing, as most of the average student does not have the motivation or interest to master something on their own. Einstein was exceptional. As we cannot expect that all students would be as capable as Einstein, so it is really necessary to impart the basic education, knowledge & skills to children, like reading and writing in order to survive in this world. They usually need school to learn and understand the existing principles and practices and can improve upon it according to their interests and capabilities.

Lastly, the education systems have undergone a lot of changes, recently, in order to enhance the cognitive abilities of the students. For example in Stanford University, usually a mentor is assigned to few students, who would not interfere in the learning process of the students. This helps the students to develop creative skills and think out of the box. The mentors are only there to be their guide and help them if they are approached and they share their experiences with the students. This way the students would be completing their studies in their own way and style.

In the end we can conclude that the present education system has evolved from its traditional approach to be more student friendly which encourages them to bring out the best of the talents and abilities to the world.

How to practice REPEAT SENTENCES

Today we shall be telling you HOW TO EXCEL IN REPEAT SENTENCES of the PTE Academic SPEAKING section.


  1. The purpose of the task is to asses your ability to repeat a sentence exactly as you hear it. Both speaking and listening skills are assessed. You will hear a sentence and must then repeat it. You will hear each sentence only once. You will have 15 seconds to record your response. In all you will hear 10-12 sentences.
  2. In repeat sentences there should be a full concentration and focus on listening the sentence.
  3. Try to imagine who the speaker is and to whom he or she is speaking. What is the context in which the sentence might be spoken.
  4. Remember that speaking correctly with fluency and right pronunciation carries maximum marks
  5. Practice and speak sentences with correct word order.
  6. Try to understand the sentence.
  7. Remember the tune(Tone) of the sentence in which it is spoken. We can recall the lyrics of a song on the slightest listening to the tune of a song. So the INTONATION of the sentence is very important.
  8. Match your rhythm, phrasing & stress of the words with the speaker.
  9. Listen to the grammatical structure of the sentence to help you to reconstruct the sentence.
  10. There is no time to write the sentence. Believe in your short term memory. It is very powerful.
  11. Give a pause for 3-5 seconds and you will recollect what was spoken. Then start speaking as the beep starts.
  12. Say every word you hear: but if you don’t know a word, say what you think you heard. Don’t keep mum or skip the words.
  13. Pronounce the word clearly.
  14. Speak at a normal speed.
  15. Listen to the various pod casts by speakers in different English accent. Start by stopping after 3-4 words, then gradually expand until you stop about every 8-10 seconds
  16. Train your short term memory by repeating announcements, jingles, advertisements or song lines that you hear.Take the help of a magazine or newspapers and practice it with your friends.
  17. Many words in sentence are unstressed or “weak forms”, for e.g. in the phrase as a team, “as a” is unstressed. You will not hear weak forms clearly but the grammar tells you they are present.
  18. Remember there is no tone before the microphone opens in this task, so start to speak as soon as the STATUS BOX changes to “Recording”.
